this is muira-ori (origami by muira?), a way to fold a piece of paper like map so that you can open and close it by just pulling and pushing the two ends of the piece of paper.

this was from the talk by professor sergio pellegrino who gave a talk tonight at leckhampton. he didn't actually invent it, but his work revolves around folding things and making things fold and unfold. the main application is for small satellites, but it could be used for all sorts of things, i'd imagine.

here's my lame attempt, but you really need some paper that is stiffer than some notepad paper.
