own a mac? don't buy hp scanjet scanners

last month, i installed the 100M worth of software that hp requires you to install on a mac to scan a document. fast forward to yesterday, i bought up activity monitor to kill menucalendarclock because it crashed, and there i see there is a process called "HP Communications" that had taken 1.5G of virtual memory, nearly double that of the next biggest virtual memory consumer, kernel_task!

even more frustrating was that i couldn't find where it was being started from, not in my user's startup items, /Library/Startup Items or other usual suspects.

i've since uninstalled the HP ScanJet software. if i were to recommend someone to buy a scanner for a mac, i'd not recommend HP's scanners.
