ultimate ice-cream

sandy and elisabeth treats us poor grad students (well, some are becoming substantially richer very soon) for dinner on tuesday night! we went to an italian restaurant called prezzo. throughout the whole night i was looking forward to dessert, and i wasn't disappointed!

yamaha's directional sound projection

so yamaha is releasing this set of 40 speakers in one box thing, which is supposed to be used to bounce sound off walls to create an immersive environment. quite sexy. i wonder if you could do it to "receive" sound.

mesh networking? ad-hoc networks in disguise?

so motorola has gone and bought out meshnetworks. in some sense, i'm not suprised given that motorola has also taken to liking experimental wireless technology like UWB. meshnetworks, at least the last time i looked at it seemed to be a cool idea, but imho, it is the mobile ad-hoc people trying to use what they've learnt in the corporate world, rather than on the battlefield. it seems like a reasonable extension, except i think the 2.4GHz will be so saturated with wifi, bluetooth, microwaves, etc, that it will present some real serious challenges to being able to deploy these in any reliable way in urban environments.

however, with that said, many big corps seem to think that is the way to go, even microsoft research has some publications on it.

hotpot night

well, so i hosted a bunch of people hot pot on friday night. there was many food and many people. most of them hongkies, with one or two exceptions! hope they didn't mind us rude obnoxious ppl :)

for those who don't know, think of hot pot as a fondue without the cheese. replace the cheese with soup base and instead of bread, you put in all sorts of vegetables, meat, noodles, etc. we did alright with 4 pots, and ended up with much left over food!

this is possibly the last thing that will happen before i move on saturday/sunday! after then, we'll have an even bigger place to have parties! oh yeah!

recap: birth of the new responsible kieran

i don't know why no one has blogged about the transformation of the quake playing, phd hacking kieran to the responsible husband (read: wife-slave) kieran.

so it started off on the 6th with an unconventional stag day/night, starting with some quake3 playing, futurama watching and then degenerated into a beer drinking, curry eating and risk playing kinda night.

Kieran.Riskboard

here's what happened at the end of the night: the black and whites joined together to dominate europe and africa, the communist red cornered and the liberal blue states overflowing into asia, australia and north america. the environmentalist greenies were relegated to the coup-hungry south america. as celebration, we all had colour cereal to finish off the day!

after a night of unruly behaviour, it was time for kieran to get married on the following saturday. i didn't take any pictures because my camera and phone had run out of battery. but there was much dancing (mostly by others) and alcohol drinking. oh yeah, and some one got married! and also someone caught the bouquet .. we all know who's wedding we'll be going to next!

update on bluetooth file transfer

seems like the new Mac OS X 10.3.6 update really screwed things over for bluetooth. here's what i get from the console when i attempt a file transfer from my phone to the powerbook (from the console log):

2004-11-16 07:06:08.623 OBEXAgent[4468] [NOTE: this exception originated in the server.] methodSignature for bad wire type: 3

so i was wrong to blame the phone, or at least it is not 100% of the problem. thing is i don't have applecare so i can't send them an email to complain, talking about it on the discussion forums don't seem to help much except vent frustration.

luckily everything else bluetooth related works on apple. isync works fine, file transfers TO the phone works alright, sailing clicker also appears to be unaffected. it is only transfers FROM the phone that are screwing up. seems like the newest update made some changes to /System/Library/CoreServices/OBEXAgent to make everything behave strangely. that has definitely been updated thru my Mac OS X 10.3.6 update.

i guess i'll just have to go back to using my Gentoo Linux box with gnome-obex-server!
